THE COMMUNITY

Sankpala is a rural, farming village on the outskirts of Tamale. It is predominantly Muslim, but there are a mix of faiths in the community. Sankpala suffers from limited resources and high illiteracy, which have become obstacles for local children to access education..

There are two breaks in each school day during which teachers are encouraged to socialize with their students. By building meaningful relationships between students and teachers, BFA creates a community of support and positive learning. As a result, its students are engaged in the classroom and consistently receive high marks on examinations.

OUR STORY

Mr. Mohammed Issahak grew up in Sankpala village, where Bright Future Academy now stands. As a teenager, he moved to Tamale to further his education. In his final year of Senior High in 2007, Mr. Issahak returned to his home and was surprised to find a large number of school-aged children out on the streets, not receiving any formal education. Many of these children were unable to pay the fees to attend the local government schools, including for textbooks and uniforms. In addition, many families preferred to have their children spend their days working on the farm or assisting at the market. It was Mr. Issahak’s intention to offer educational and personal support for these children, in hopes to help alleviate the cycle of poverty and illiteracy in the community.

With the assistance of Mr. Hamid Abdul Razak, Mr. Issahak began holding private lessons in reading and mathematics for a few children in 2007. In the beginning, the two teachers paid out-of-pocket for the textbooks that the students used.

After years of dedicated work and passion, the two volunteers succeeded in establishing a full-time school complex. The school operates in the empty stalls of a local outdoor marketplace, and now receives small donations and school materials from the community. From an initial start of thirteen (13) students in 2007, Bright Future Academy now boasts of over two hundred (200) pupils and six (6) full-time volunteer teachers.

Bright Future Academy produces strong academic results, and its students pay far less to attend than those at surrounding government schools. The teachers at BFA provide hands-on support and attention for their students, and are dedicated to their growth and well-being.  For its affordability and its commitment to student-centered, high quality education, children from all over the community are eager to school at Bright Future Academy.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHT

We wish to build the future of the underprivileged children in society, so that they may contribute to and share in the development of their communities.

Issahaku Sherifa is a ten year old girl from Dawunyili, a suburb of Sankpala where the school is currently located. Sherifa had been attending Bright Future Academy since the age of four, and always performed well.

Last year, Sherifa stopped showing up to school. Her father had passed away, and her mother alone was unable to support her education. Sherifa had no money for school fees or for her textbooks.

Concerned about her absences, Sharifa’s teachers went and visited her home. They encouraged her to return to class and to not worry about paying the monthly school fees. With the support of the school, Sherifa was able to return to finish to her primary education. She is currently in class four (4), and is faring well with her mates in the class.

Sherifa is just one of many orphans and underprivileged children that Bright Future Academy supports and encourages. Without Bright Future Academy, many of these students would be desperate to find and afford any education.
